As we noted above, ESET goes out of its way to differentiate NOD32 from other ESET security products. ESET NOD32 has very limited anti-malware and parental controls. ESET was smart enough to retain all the great features introduced in the entry-level suite, including the advanced malware scan, but it may have been wiser to retain some other of the more advanced features in the core product.

In its place, you get an unexpected feature that is useful for few individuals or their computers. ESET has added a tool that allows you to encrypt any directory you choose. You can specify a user account and password for the encryption. All the contents of the directory are encrypted. You can, of course, encrypt other directories, too, or make this a global option.

The ability to encrypt folders is useful for just about anyone who has a computer, for those with a business that handles sensitive client or customer information, and perhaps even for your home computer or a computer in your home office. Just about any OS, including Windows, OS X, Linux, and anything else, can encrypt a directory. If you haven’t been scanning your computer, encrypting can be a good way to ensure that none of your personal data or browser history could fall into someone else’s hands. If youre considering protecting a hard drive and your online surfing history, this is something you can test and see if it works for you. But I really wouldn’t want to rely on such a security system every day.

I tested the ESET folder encryption on OS X 10.4.11 and 10.6.8 with two different Windows installs. Both OS X 10.4.11 and 10.6.8 are safe to install, but using an older system is always a risk since it might be easy to get a security update.
