I’ve been using VueScan for months, and the folks at Vue have done a great job in creating a powerful and flexible scanning/printer software. The interface is simple and logical and the program is intuitive. After scanning a large batch of slides I encountered significant problems with VueScan 9.6. VueScan would not scan files larger than about 4GB. Scanning 8GB would take so long I decided to send them to my house instead. VueScan 9.7 was released soon afterwards and when I installed it I immediately encountered problems. After a scan I was able to open the file but the file was corrupt. Although I will install 9.7 onto the machine that is running my photo editor, I do not plan to run any other programs on that machine so it will probably sit dormant while waiting for me to discover how to solve the problems I have encountered.
It has been a while since I scanned with Epson’s new VueScan 4 product, so I downloaded VueScan 3.9.3.4 to do a comparison test. I am using a scanner that has been giving me trouble, so I figured it’s time to fire up VueScan to see if it can save my scanner, no matter what it takes. After scanning I immediately discover the problem: VueScan 3.9.3.4 will only save an eight-megapixel scan at a maximum resolution of 4,800 x 3,600 pixels, whereas VueScan 4 will only save a 24-megapixel scan at a maximum resolution of 10,400 x 7,600. Even more disconcerting, you can actually save larger images if you “borrow” and steal pixels from the image around your scanned object in order to make it fit within the software’s 8-MB limit. The upshot is that if you want to take advantage of the number of megapixels that VueScan 4 offers, you can’t save scans larger than 8 MB.

VueScan has quite an interesting feature that requires scanning that uses a previous scanned photo for cropping. It’s good for examples and selecting the placement of other images. This could be a very nice addition. Better yet would be to include the ability to crop the current image, but I’m certain that would limit its appeal.
It seems like VueScan used to be free, if I remember right. I would even consider going back to VueScan over scanning in Photoshop. But other than the ability to batch digitize, a feature that does not save time and money and may even get a little tedious as the original slides increase in number. Also, the newest version of VueScan has added a second setting for digitizing, one that must be adjusted before using, which I’m not a huge fan of. That setting is on the slide pane, where you can see what it’s doing and adjust it by simply turning the dial. So I don’t find it to be that essential. Vuescan is a powerful program, but other than that, not much has changed from the original version.
I agree with much of what Hans said about the GUI and so I’ve been wanting to try VueScan, so this offer from Hamrick Software to give away free upgrades is very appealing. I don’t have an image scanner, so I’ll have to wait to try out VueScan. I’ve heard some good things about it.

This is a pretty serious issue in VueScan. If you open two images in two different views, the scanner will not work correctly. The worst case scenario is that it will produce duplicate image files. Using two copies of the same image opens the chance for loss of image quality.
